Several beautiful beaches

One of the ten most beautiful bays in the world

The area of Saint Thomas is rich in history and culture and was first settled by the Taino Indians who inhabited the island when Columbus arrived in 1493. Legend has it that the curving quays of the island led Columbus to name the islands after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgin followers. The changes that followed the Second World War eventually led to the building of the first tourist resorts on St. Thomas Island in the mid 1950’s.

The climate on Saint Thomas Island is typically tropical with hot summer sunshine and warm Caribbean breezes. The temperature rarely drops below 28-30 degrees Celsius. There is no definitive rainy season in St. Thomas and the rain that does occur is usually in the form of brief, refreshing showers. Tourist accommodation consists mostly of hotels and luxury rental villas. If you want to travel around the island one of the best ways of doing so is to hire a car. You will need a driver’s license but no local permit is needed – and an added bonus for British tourists is that they drive on the left in St. Thomas, a hangover from when it was ruled by the Danes. If you don’t like to drive on holidays then get your hotel to book you a seat on the Safari Bus, which makes a round trip of the island.

There is plenty for visitors to do on Saint Thomas Island besides visiting historical sites such as the seat of Francis Drake. The island has several beautiful beaches and fabulous views from Megan Bay. There is even a championship golf course for aficionados of the game. You can go swimming in Megan’s Bay, which National Geographic Magazine has voted as one of the ten most beautiful bays in the world – or you might want to go ocean racing and find out what it is like to take a trip aboard a million dollar boat.

If you like bargain shopping then there is plenty of that on Saint Thomas Island where there are duty free goods aplenty. For visitors who enjoy eating, there are plenty of casual eateries. Or, if you want to be adventurous, try some genuine French cuisine at Betty’s Bar in French town. You should not leave the island without tasting one of their famous tropical drinks made with Virgin Island rum. Whatever kind of holiday you enjoy you can enjoy it to the fullest on Saint Thomas Island.
