Seattle

The Pacific Coast city of Seattle, Washington, is the home to movie and television sets, a great professional football team, and the Space Needle, one of the most recognised landmarks around. It was the home of the 1962 World’s Fair and boasts some great cultural locations and tourist spots that are not to be missed. Loaded with plenty of eateries and hotels, the best way to see the city of Seattle is by taking the ‘DUCK’ tour.

As you travel to the corner of Fifth and Broad Street at the Seattle Centre – you can get there by monorail – where the World’s Fair was located, you will come to the DUCK terminus and view for the first time the very unusual vehicle sitting there waiting for you. The DUCK is a WWII amphibious landing vehicle that will drive you around Seattle and sail on Lake Union for a very different type of tour. The pilot of the DUCK is also your tour guide and they know quite a bit about the attractions they will point out to you, including things that are not found in any guidebook published today.

Why visit Seattle ?

Seattle location iamge - CruiseDirection

The home to the Space Needle

Seattle is a fascinating city with something to interest all visitors

The tour starts with land-based sites and drives past the Space Needle – which should definitely be visited in more depth before leaving the city – and numerous museums as you make your way to the waterfront along Eliot Bay. Here the aquarium and the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Centre are located on Pier 66, two great places to bring the kiddies. There are shops and eateries here as well.

The Pike Place Market is also located here. Founded in 1907, it is one of the most well known markets in the world that sells just about anything anyone would ever want or need. From flowers to herbal recipes, this two level market is one of the most interesting places in Seattle. The market is not only known for its amazing array of items for sale, but also for its flying fish. As you walk through the many stalls of Pike Place Market and the fishmongers, you can watch as the vendors throw fish to one another, over the heads of the visitors and creating ‘flying fish’.

From the market the DUCK turns and goes through the centre of Seattle. This area is filled with office buildings, hotels, offices, and shops – mostly brand name stores – before heading towards the shores of Lake Union. Once there, the DUCK changes into a boat and the pilot will take you around the shores of Lake Union where you will get a spectacular view of Seattle’s skyline, and even the house that Tom Hanks used in the movie ‘Sleepless In Seattle’.

The entire DUCK tour takes about one hour and thirty minutes to complete, but it gives you a good basis to start from when deciding what to see while visiting the city. Once you have returned to Seattle Centre, you will want to go to the Space Needle and take the ride 520 feet up in the air where guides will tell you about the view of the city you are seeing and point out numerous different locations. From there you can visit the Pacific Science Centre, the Children’s Museum – adults must be accompanied by a child for admittance – and the Experience Music Project, a rock-n-roll museum with an extensive collection of Jimi Hendrix memorabilia and more.
