Why visit San Diego ?

A Pacific Coast town

Well known for its old fashioned trolleys, bustling nightlife, and unique Spanish flavour

San Diego, like many of the cities on the Pacific Coast in California, is prone to be occasionally shaken up by earthquakes. Don’t let this bother you as you take in the sites scattered throughout this large and unique town. The best way to see San Diego is by the Old Town Trolley that is complete with guided commentary about the many different sections that make up San Diego and a hop-on-hop-off service that allows you to explore favourite locations in more depth.

All visitors to San Diego will want to visit the Old Town, where the city was started by the Spanish and grew outward. The old schoolhouse, village green and historical buildings – some replica replacements for ones that have fallen to the ravages of time and earthquakes – can all be found here. This area is off limits to vehicles, and visitors can wander in and out of the buildings, in the Bazaar del Mundo and through the churches and historic homes free from worry and traffic.

Move down to the bay area known as the Embarcadero for some walking along the harbour and seeing the sites. The Maritime Museum is here and three ships – ‘Star of India’, ‘Berkeley’ and ‘Medea’ – can be toured as part of the exhibits. You can take a harbour cruise to get a more panoramic view of the city or visit the Seaport Village, a quaint village that was custom-built and contains shops and dining establishments. Tuna Harbour Park is a short distance away and visitors can take in the number of fishing vessels anchored there representing the city’s long standing tuna fishing industry.

Balbao Park is the nature and cultural lover’s domain. Here there is the Botanical Garden and the renowned San Diego Zoo with its famous pandas. If you want to see these gentle giants, you will need to get there in the morning while they are enjoying their breakfast. The Hall of Champions, the Model Railroad Museum, the Museum of Man, the San Diego Aerospace Museum and the San Diego Museum of Art are just some of the museums located in Balbao Park to be enjoyed.

Lastly, Horton Plaza and the Gaslamp Quarter are great for visitors who enjoy shopping in a European style plaza. It is rich with colours reminiscent of the 1960s, and also has a rich nightlife offered by the many bars and nightclubs. If discoing isn’t your thing, then consider the spookier side of San Diego and join one of the ‘Ghosts and Graveyards’ tours run by the Old Town Trolley Tours for a different taste of the city that is San Diego.
