Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and today there are only images depicted on pottery and in murals to remind us of this great work of mankind. The largest of the Dodecanese Islands in the Mediterranean between the Aegean Sea and the Middle East coast, the island of Rhodes is still a tourist’s dream. With accommodation ranging from self-catering to modern hotels, this beautiful island is filled with plenty to do and see.

The island is wrapped in Greek mythology and rarely a day goes by when the sun isn’t shining. The majority of the island’s hills and low mountains are covered with natural forest, which is perfect for exploring and hiking. Roses grow freely from the fertile soil of Rhodes and the beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. Littered with resorts, it is no wonder that Rhodes is so popular for both weekend and extended getaways. Full of life, the island is a mecca of sports, cultural, and nightlife events. And that is not including the trips visitors may wish to make to the other islands in the archipelago.

Why visit Rhodes ?

A tourist’s dream

The largest of the Dodecanese Islands in the Mediterranean between the Aegean Sea and the Middle East coast

Rhodes has plenty to offer its visitors in the cultural department. It is the home of the Ecofilms Rhodes International Film and Visual Arts Festival. The Municipality of Rhodes Cultural Organization is organising events all year round on the island and visitors here can catch one of these many festivals while they are on holiday.

Rodini Park is another place to see and this park is the home of the acclaimed School of Rhetoric where Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony, Brutus and Cicero studied. A popular site throughout the centuries, peacocks flourish here as do the pine trees, cypress and oaks. The necropolis is also located here. Built in the 3rd century, it contains the tomb of Ptolemy the astronomer amongst others.

Natural springs adorn the island and they are magical places nestled in the beautiful foliage. There are numerous museums on the island that chronicle the history of the area, including the many catastrophes that have devastated the island, such as the earthquake that toppled the Colossus statue. Many of the island’s historical artefacts can be found in these establishments and if you plan on visiting any of them, you should allow yourself at least two hours per museum. The ancient ruins of Rhodes are a must for any visitor and the Acropolis of Lindos must be seen to be truly appreciated. The complex includes the theatre below the Temple of Athena, the Nymphaia, the Odeion, and more. Additionally the medieval city of Rhodes and the various other acropolis’ and ruins across the island are worth seeing.

Visitors to Rhodes should ensure that they make time to visit the fabulous beaches. There are plenty of water sports to be enjoyed including fishing, diving, and snorkelling. But the best sites on the island are the ruins, and if you can take in as many as possible you will have memories worth a lifetime.
