Puerto Montt

Smaller cruise ships will dock at the Public Pier inside Canal Tenglo, while larger cruise ships will tender to the same pier. From there, it is a short walk into the centre of the town. Puerto Montt is in Chile, and most of the large cruise companies, including Princess, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean, offer cruises that include Puerto Montt on their itineraries. Passengers will usually fly to somewhere in South America, such as Buenos Aires or Santiago, to join the cruise.

Cruising to Puerto Montt is often part of a cruise around South America, taking in stops in other countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and the Falkland Islands. You can also find longer cruises that may start or finish in Los Angeles, and include countries such as Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Depending on how much time you have available, most of these cruises will include excursions at the ports they stop off at. Alternatively, you may prefer to explore on your own.

Why visit Puerto Montt ?

The gateway to the Patagonian Fjords and the Andes Mountains

The town of Puerto Montt retains the feeling of a small town despite its size, and is known for its wonderful seafood

Southern Chile is a great destination for anyone who loves the great outdoors. With mountainous national parks, volcanoes, and glacial lakes, the landscape is stunning. In Chile’s magnificent Lake District, you will find snow-capped volcanoes towering over alpine valleys. Glaciers carved out the terrain, leaving jewel like lakes in their path.

Some of its restaurants afford the diner a view of the Calbuco Volcano or Tenglo Island. The best place to go for food is the Angelmo cove area, where you will also find a crafts fair where you can purchase local produce and utensils.

This area of Chile has attracted many German immigrants, and this is reflected in the town’s gabled homes with elaborate balconies. Stroll around the streets of Puerto Montt and you will find some interesting buildings. The cathedral was built in 1856, and is constructed entirely of larch wood with a copper cupola. Stained glass panels form the front wall, and as you enter the sanctuary you can look up to see a brightly painted figure of Christ with a host of angels looking down on all those who enter. Other buildings include the Jesuit Church, the Juan Pablo II Museum, and the Diego Rivera Art House.

The nearby town of Frutillar was founded by German settlers in 1856. This charming hamlet has a German museum with exhibits depicting how the early settlers lived and worked.

The Alerce Andino National Park covers almost 40,000 square hectares, which includes a huge mountain with deep valleys covered by thick larch forests. Deep in the forest, you will find hidden mountain lagoons and a wide variety of animals. The best views are from the Chapo Lake and the valleys of the Lenca and Chaicas Rivers. If you are fairly active, there are plenty of outdoor activities available around Puerto Montt, including horseback riding, kayaking, and white-water rafting.

Lake Esmeralda, the Todos los Santos Lake, the Monte Tronador Volcano and the Osorno Volcano are all located in the Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. There you can see the path of the lava flows over many years.
