If you are cruising to Nice, try to be up on deck as the ship enters the port, as you will have a wonderful view of the famous palm-fringed Promenade des Anglais if you are approaching from the west. Smaller cruise ships dock at the Quai du Commerce. In season, there is a free shuttle and everything close by, such as taxis, currency exchange, and tourist information. Large cruise ships dock nearby in Villefranche.

Most of the big cruise companies will have cruises that include Nice in their itineraries. Nice is often included as a port with other Mediterranean cities such as Naples and Barcelona. You can also find cruises that focus on France and include Nice along with other French cities such as Avignon, Monaco, and Cannes. If you only have a brief time in Nice, you may want to consider the excursions offered by the cruise lines. These will often cover the highlights of Nice. If you have more time, you have the freedom to explore on your own.

Why visit Nice ?

Nice location iamge - CruiseDirection

Stunning seaside location, year-round sunshine, and old-world opulence

Since the 19th century, Nice has been attracting the jet set and sun seekers from across the world

The city has fabulous architecture, amazing markets, a wealth of up-market restaurants, and an enticing old town, and whilst it may be scruffy in places, it still has an undoubted charm.

Vieux Nice is one of the city’s top attractions. You could spend hours wandering through its narrow dark winding alleyways. The layout of the streets has barely changed since the 1700s, and today you will find its narrow streets packed with boutiques, bars, delis, and restaurants. Pop into the Cours Saleya, a massive market square that is the ideal destination for foodies. Take a wander through the flower market to enjoy the intoxicating smells and colours of the flowers. If you happen to be in Nice on a Monday, then the flea market is worth a visit. Whilst you are strolling around, look out for some of the quarters’ best architecture, the Cathedrale Ste-Reparte, the Chapelle de la Misericorde, and the 17th century Palais Lascaris.

The Promenade des Anglais is the city’s world-famous seafront. This magnificent promenade runs the entire length of the Baie des Anges and has dedicated lanes for skaters and cyclists. You can hire skates or bikes, but it is also pleasant to stroll along the promenade on foot. Along the way, you will come across some of its landmarks, including the art deco Palais de la Mediterranee, and the Hotel Negresco.

Art lovers will enjoy a trip to the Musee Matisse, which is located two kilometres north in the Cimeiz quarter. The museum houses a variety of works by Matisse, including drawings, sculptures, oil paintings, tapestries, and the famous paper cut-outs. The permanent collection is housed in a 17th century Genoese villa, and in the park across the way from the museum is the Dame de Cimiez cemetery where Matisse is buried.
