The city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus is located south of the island’s capital of Nicosia. It is the largest beach resort on the island, and many people come here to enjoy extended vacations. The second largest city in Cyprus, you can enjoy staying at one of its many hotels, resorts, or self-catering apartments. The city is ten miles long and the Troodos Mountains act as a beautiful backdrop to this historically rich city.

Limassol is the primary city for the island’s wine-making industry and it is bustling with shopping opportunities and a holiday feel. It has what is considered the best nightlife on the island and it is the home of Cyprus’ annual Wine Festival every September. The wineries here offer visitors free samples of their product for ten days, namely the ten-day pre-Lenten Carnival. There is also a drama festival held at Kourion just outside the city every year as well.

The largest beach resort on the island

The primary city for the island’s wine-making industry

The beaches around the city are always bustling and they offer guests all the facilities to be expected at a well-equipped beach resort, including bars and cafes. There are uncrowded beaches outside town, to the west of the harbour, and the city has a recently added marina that offers yachtsmen everything they need. Of course, there are plenty of water sports here and people who enjoy fishing, diving, and more will be able to partake in these pastimes with no problem.

St Andrews Street, located near the seafront promenade, is the perfect place to go shopping. There are European wares, local produce, shoes, clothing, toys, and more available here in among the shops on this bustling street. Makarios Avenue is another area great for shopping and this part of Limassol includes small individual shops and showrooms of every type.

Limassol Castle near the old port is where King Richard the Lionheart married Queen Berengaria of Navarre and made her the Queen of England on his return from the Crusades. The Medieval Museum of Cyprus is located here, and there are tombstones and pottery from the island to be seen in the exhibits. There is also a municipal art gallery and Folk Art Museum available for tourists to explore. The Municipal Gardens and small zoo offer nature lovers a place to explore and the kids have a place to play.

Kolossi Castle was built in the 13th century and it was the original Grand Commandery of the Knights Templar. When Acre fell in 1291, it served as the headquarters of the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Visitors who travel the route to Paphos will come across a variety of different archaeological digs and excavations, some of which indicate the presence of a large Roman city that was once important in this area of Cyprus.

The entire island of Cyprus is rich with Greek and Turkish history and Limassol is a good place to be based for day trips as you explore more widely.
