Why visit La Spezia ?

La Spezia location iamge - CruiseDirection

Located between Pisa and Genoa

Located in Italy’s Liguria region just at the beginning of the La Spezia Gulf

Visitors will relish the opportunity of seeing La Spezia’s five small coastal areas that include Riomaggiore, Manarola, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monterosso al Mare. Access to these places is only via the railway, various hiking trails, or a passenger ferry, as there are no road links.

La Spezia’s main tourist attraction is the Cinque Terre; both trains and boats are available to convey passengers from La Spezia to this scenic destination. En-route to Cinque Terre, the boat passes through Lerici and Portovenere, which are also accessible by public transport.

A visit to La Spezia would be incomplete without visiting or even perhaps worshiping in some of the ancient churches such as Cristo Re dei Secoli ("Christ the King of Centuries", Cathedral) built by Adalberto Libera; Abbey church of Santa Maria Assunta ("Our Lady of the Assumption", 13th century); Santi Giovanni e Agostino ("Saints John and Augustine", 16th century).

Other objects of attraction for visitors are the museums, of which there are several: Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (CAMeC); Diocesan Museum; Palazzina delle Arti; Ethnographic Civic Museum; Amedeo Lia Museum; Technical Naval Museum; Ubaldo Formentini (located in the Castle of San Giorgio); and the National Transportation Museum. Inside the Abbey church of Santa Maria Assunta are a number of artworks that include an Incoronation of the Virgin designed by Andrea della Robbia; the Multiplication of Bread design by Giovanni Battista Casoni and St. Bartholomew’s Martyrdom, a design by Luca Cambiaso. Santi Giovanni e Agostino offers striking 18th & 19th century decorations.

Events to be enjoyed in La Spezia are the San Giuseppe held on March 19th each year. Considered as a feast of the city’s Patron Saint, this event is the most celebrated event that brings together visitors from all around the world. Every first Sunday in August witnesses the Palio del Golfo event in La Spezia; this event pulls crowds from all walks of life. On the same first Sunday of every month with the exception of July & August there is a very popular antiques fair known as Cercantico.
