A trip to the coast of Normandy in Northern France is something that should not be missed when visiting Europe, especially the small picturesque city of Honfleur. Situated near the ferry ports of Le Havre and Caen, this city is especially convenient for anyone living in the United Kingdom who needs a more provincial change of pace. Whether you prefer the all-inclusive services of a hotel, the homey feel of a Bed & Breakfast, or the convenience of self-catering, all are available in Honfleur.

Honfleur is one of those cities that has a little bit of everything for tourists and casual weekenders to make their time there enjoyable and stress-free. Strolling from the town centre to the beach and taking in the beauty of the English Channel is a lovely thing to do, no matter what time of year it is. If you are there from midsummer to autumn, you’ll find the waters warm enough for a swim. The ‘Naturospace’ tropical butterfly centre provides guests with a nature activity indoors for when the weather is inclement and a little too wet for walking around the beautiful city.

Small picturesque city

There is no place better than Honfleur in which to enjoy some freshly caught seafood

The churches in the city are also popular destinations and are filled with interesting history and artefacts. Saint Catherine’s Church was built in the 15th century by the local shipbuilders and it was originally intended to be only a temporary structure. The ceiling of the church looks like the hulls of ships that have been turned upside down and the entire building is made of wood, including the shingles on the roof. The Chapelle de Notre Dame-de-Grace is located on a hill above Honfleur and it contains model wooden boats of every kind. The walk up the steep hill is well worth it as it provides guests with a beautiful view of the town and the water – a perfect photo-opportunity!

Many artists have been inspired by this lovely French city and the surrounding area of Normandy. There is a museum in the city named after impressionist painter Eugene Boudin. It contains many of his paintings as well as pieces by other artists who have been inspired by the beauty of the region.

Because Honfleur is so close to Le Havre, boat trips to the ‘Pont de Normandie’ are available on a daily basis. The bridge was constructed in 1995 and it was considered the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world at the time. Its pylons are over 200 metres in height and the bridge is a very impressive sight. Visitors can walk across the bridge via the small picnic area and car park that is east of Honfleur’s town centre, or enjoy a boat trip that takes you beneath this massive structure for a different view.

There is no place better than Honfleur in which to enjoy some freshly caught seafood. The restaurants serve a daily catch on their menus, and many of the establishments are located along the docks where you can enjoy your meal and watch the fishing boats come in. If you are self-catering in Honfleur, then on Saturday mornings you will definitely want to visit the open-air market and indulge yourself in fresh produce, fish, cheese and local cider for a feast at your home away from home.
