Flaam

Part of the Aurlandsfjord, the city of Flåm is located around the fjord and surrounded by steep mountains, waterfalls, and deep valleys. It is the perfect spot for a holiday to get you in tune with nature, and most of the activities in and around the city are nature and adventure based. With cultural and historic events thrown into the mix, you have a unique place to stay to view the stunning countryside. With the Flåm railway nearby or fjord cruising to enjoy, visitors to Flåm will never be disappointed.

The Sognefjord, where Flåm is located, is the deepest in the world at 1308 metres deep and is 204 kilometres long. The city can be accessed by car, boat, or train, and the fjord is deep enough to accommodate large cruise ships in the spring and summer. Visitors can stroll around the piers and watch the boats come and go on the fjord, maybe even taking in a boat trip of their own to gain a different perspective on the fjord.

Little place between steep mountains

It is the perfect spot for a holiday to get you in tune with nature

The Flåm Railway is 65 years old and it is widely known for taking visitors through some of the most beautiful territory Norway has to offer. You will climb from the fjord 900 metres to the mountain top over twisting trails that tunnel into the mountain and simply take your breath away. The railway stretches 20 kilometres, and it’s worth the trip to see the breathtaking view of the fjord and city below.

The name Flåm means ‘little place between steep mountains’ and this is a truly accurate description for this city. English and German travellers discovered it in the late 1800s and they established the first hotel here. The original tourists to Flåm came by two-wheeled buggy through the countryside until the railway was opened in 1909. The road that leads between Haugastol and Finse down to Flåm is popular with visitors who enjoy cycling through the summer and autumn months.

The city offers fishing trips on the fjord or in one of the many lakes in the mountains. Hiking and cycling trails are plentiful in this area. The Otternes Bygdetun farmyard has 27 different buildings on it that date back to the 1600s. It is a living museum that children will love and it offers everyone a picturesque view of Flåm and the fjord. There are many cultural traditions that are practiced in Flåm, and visitors to the city will easily pick up on these.

The Fretheim Hotel dates from 1870 and even though it is a modern hotel, there is still plenty to see from its early days. The architecture is just one such example. With 1180 rooms and a grand view of the fjord, guests to Flåm can stay here and enjoy the activities the hotel sponsors, such as salmon fishing in the river, a fjord safari, camping in the back country, and ice fishing in the mountains for a different taste of life and food.
