Dubrovnik

Croatia is one of the few countries you may not think of when planning a trip to the Mediterranean, yet it is one of the most beautiful countries to be found in the region. It has a rich cultural heritage, magnificent natural constructions and warm weather. The historic city of Dubrovnik is in the southern part of the country below the Roman city of Pula and is on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Visitors can explore the reefs and islets from Dubrovnik and the city is within driving distance of ski resorts during the winter.

Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century and today it encompasses two separated settlements from that time. It is surrounded by high city walls that were built to protect the city from Arab, Venetian, Macedonian, Serb and other invaders who attempted to conquer this unique position on the coast. At the time the population was very aristocratic and there were three classes occupying the city. Today, everyone lives as one and the city is booming with tourists and visitors.

Why visit Dubrovnik ?

Beautiful coastline

One of the most beautiful countries to be found in the region

The name of the city is derived from the Croatian word meaning ‘oak wood’. The city was surrounded by oak trees and was built on the rocks, which is what the Latin name Ragusa means. Accommodation for tourists comprises many hotels, self-catering establishments, hostels or campgrounds and the restaurants in the city are very varied and have something for everyone.

Visitors to Dubrovnik can enjoy a variety of different activities and events. Dubrovnik’s Summer Festival is one of the largest and most celebrated cultural events in the country. The celebration includes theatre and dance featuring international stars, and performances are spread out throughout both indoor and open-air venues in this Renaissance/Baroque city.

The city has been the birthplace of numerous poets and artists and its literary renaissance occurred in the 15th and 16th century. Today there are numerous landmarks and memorials to recognise these city sons and daughters. The poet Ivan Gundulic, a Croatian 17th century writer is honoured at the beginning of every Dubrovnik Summer Festival by having his famous poem ‘Osman’ read to the crowds. Additionally, the city is home to numerous art schools and many of the city’s painters have helped to paint and decorate the various buildings in the city over the centuries.

This cultural centre of Croatia is also the home of some of the best diving and water sports, such as sailing, kayaking, rafting, and fishing. The city also offers some great opportunities for hunting, hiking, and climbing for those more adventurous visitors. The newest addition to Dubrovnik is the adventure park. It is built on the remains of an old military base and it offers visitors the chance to learn about the area while having fun.

The city, located on some of the most beautiful coastline of the Mediterranean, offers guests some great cultural activities and beautiful scenery.
