Da Nang

Da Nang is located on the coast of the Eastern Sea by the Han River between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. While not an enormously popular tourist destination, Da Nang does have a lot to offer in terms of sites with cultural and historical significance.

Da Nang is a tropical city with two seasons dry and rainy, though rain can be expected to fall year round. The true rainy season runs from about September through December. Monsoons are worst during this period but can and do occur through March. April is actually the driest month of the year in Da Nang making it a recommended time to visit. Temperatures generally range between 25 and 33 degrees year round.

With 30 kilometres of coastline, Da Nang has beautiful beaches and seashores including Nam O, Xuan Thieu, and Bac My An to name a few. Lined with white sand Da Nang’s beaches can be a great place for a getaway if you can avoid the rains.

Cultural and historical significance

A worthwhile destination for the adventurous traveller who is looking for someplace different for a holiday

Another popular spot for Da Nang visitors is the Marble Mountains also known as the (“Five Elements Mountains (Ngu Hanh Son)” in Vietnam. They are a natural range of five small different coloured limestone peaks hovering over the East China Sea approximately eight kilometres from Da Nang. Aside from their natural beauty, the Marble Mountains hold significant religious and historical importance as well. Within the mountains are caves that house pagodas that date to the 17th century. There are also stone and bronze statues and Champa sculptures that date to the 14th and 15th centuries. The mountains themselves are comprised of very high-grade limestone and it is quarried and used by local sculptors and stone furniture makers in the nearby village of Hoa Hai. Please note, while the Marble Mountains are absolutely a worthwhile destination, many of the interior caves that feature significant architectural and archaeological sites can be difficult to access especially in the wet weather.

Da Nang is also the home to several interesting museums. For instance, the Cham museum houses over 300 sculptures and idols that were discovered in Cham temples throughout Central Vietnam dating to the Champa Kingdom whose capital was located in Da Nang. The Champa kingdom flourished during the 9th and 10th centuries before slowly declining and becoming part of Vietnam officially in 1832. Other interesting museums in Da Nang include the Ho Chi Minh museum, Da Nang museum, and the 5th Military Division Museum, all of which provide interesting insight into the city’s history and culture.

While visiting Da Nang, there are a number of stores where once can purchase souvenirs or mementos of your visit including shops that feature, local pottery, fine arts, and handcrafts. Visitors are sure to find something special. There are a number of restaurants in Da Nang that offer local cuisine. Some choices include Daesco Restaurant, Mau, or Thuy Ha Restaurant. For international style cuisine, try Cafe Indochine or Hanakim Restaurant.

Da Nang is a city brimming with history and culture, while a bit off the beaten path; it is definitely a worthwhile destination for the adventurous traveller who is looking for someplace different for a holiday.
