When people think about exotic Caribbean destinations, they normally don’t even consider Caracas. In fact, odds are they may have never heard of the destination. But Caracas has a lot to offer as a holiday destination and because it is not over-run with tourists, at least not yet anyway, those offerings come at a very budget-friendly price.

The city is an up and coming tourist destination in South America. It is the capital of Venezuela and it is located very close to the coast, making beach accessibility very convenient. Because it is also mountainous, it has an elevation of about 2,400ft (800m), which gives it a very unique climate.

The actual capital city is situated under the Avila, which towers 7,800ft (2,600m) above. You can stay at the Humboldt Hotel, which is reachable by special cable cars that take visitors up the mountain to where the hotel is located. The views from the cable car are amazing and this ride is a major tourist attraction in its own right, even for people not staying at the hotel.

The capital of Venezuela

Well worth a visit on your next holiday

Caracas is also a cultural centre, with a museum of modern art that is one of the best in all of South America. It also hosts an annual theatre festival, which draws performers from all over the world.

There are lots of things to see and do in Caracas. The city is known for the quality of its restaurants and eateries that serve local specialties from all four corners of the globe. Beef dishes are popular, as well as a variety of regional specialties.

Shopping opportunities abound and the city is home to several modern shopping centres that border on the luxurious. Popular items, which can be found here, include gold, jewels and fine leather shoes. The city also has an excellent racetrack, Hipodromo La Rinconada, which hosts horse races on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It also has a professional baseball stadium and a soccer arena, located at the university.

Caracas has several parks to explore. Avila National Park is very popular with hikers and a short hike to the upper-most elevation of the park will reward visitors with a panoramic view of the entire city. Caracas also has a botanical garden, which contains plants and flowers unique to South America.

The city and its people are strongly influenced by the Catholic faith and there are many festivals and processions throughout the year. Everything in the town closes during the Christmas and Easter holiday periods, so that the locals can celebrate these religious festivals, perhaps by taking part in the variety of processions, street parties and special masses. There are also a number of other cultural and music festivals held at different times of the year. Caracas has several other museums, galleries and parks that visitors can explore and its downtown area contains a historic quarter that is worth exploring. There are also theatres, cinemas and museums located in the area of the Parque Central, which is on the eastern edge of the historic quarter of town.

The city has an international airport, so getting there is a breeze. Once in Caracas, getting around is easy if you make use of the city’s pride and joy, “the metro.” This train is safe, clean, amazingly cheap and runs from early morning until late at night, providing transport to various points of interest in and around the city. There are also taxis at very affordable rates, which people generally use at night, when the traffic in town is not as busy as it is during the day.

Caracas is not a very well known vacation spot, but it is surely an up and coming one. The people are friendly and welcoming and prices are far less than you would encounter at more popular holiday destinations. This is definitely a South American city that is well worth a visit on your next holiday.
