A must see city in the United States
World-renowned for its higher education, medical facilities and historical sites
Paul Revere once roamed the Boston streets and Bostonians are proud of their historical heritage. A mix of history and the fast-paced life of the 21st century can both be found in Boston. The 19th century Trinity Church, which is of Richardsonian Romanesque design, is located right next to the 60 storey high John Hancock Tower. The Old State House, on cobblestone streets, is where the first Declaration of Independence was read. The new sports and entertainment complex, TD Banknorth Garden, provides the city with modern slick venues. While, the USS Constitution, also known as “Old Ironsides” is anchored at the Charlestown navy yard, where free tours are given.
The neighbourhoods of Boston showcase their ethnic culture through their food. On the North End, try the lasagne or the gnocchi. The Faneuil Hall neighbourhood serves hearty Irish meals with ale at a variety of pubs. In Cambridge, tantalise your tongue with Mediterranean, Turkish, Indian, Russian or Afghan cuisine. Chinatown offers Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian or Vietnamese food. You should also try the Dim Sum, served at most Chinese restaurants before 2 pm, to sample anything on a cart that passes by the table. On the wharf, taste the clams, fried or in a chowder. For exquisite dining, try Beacon Hill, where Sam Adams Brewery holds tours and offers tasting samples for those with proper identification.
To add an educational destination, visit the Museum of Fine Arts. It offers programmes for children and families and includes a large Impressionist collection, especially works by Monet. Asian and Old Kingdom Egyptian pieces, as well as classical art and medieval tapestries can also be viewed. In addition, Harvard University features Harvard Square, which has street performers and a variety of restaurants and hotels.
Exercise is valued in Boston and the city is known as “America’s Walking City.” Freedom Trail, a walking history trail and Urban AdvenTours, a guided bike tour, meander in and out of the Boston historic neighbourhoods. The Harborwalk has over 40 miles of walkway along the Boston harbour. This free public walkway includes parks, seating areas, boat ramps, swimming areas and eateries. It also connects to the Rose Kennedy Greenway, which covers over 20 acres.
For the sports fan, visit the oldest Major League baseball park in the United States, Fenway Park. Catch a Boston Red Sox game and cheer on the 2004 World Series champs.
