Abu Dhabi

A popular cruise port for starting a tour or a stop-over location, Abu Dhabi is situated on the Persian Gulf, Abu Dhabi is divided into the historic Al Ain region, which is centred on an oasis on an old camel caravan route, Al Gharbia, which is part of the world’s largest uninterrupted desert, and the city itself.

Its speedy rise from a poor, rural country to extreme wealth comes from the oil discovered in 1958. Putting its money into the development of modern infrastructure, health care, education, arts and culture, it has become a modern, rich country in just over a generation. It now has the highest per capita income in the world.

Why visit Abu Dhabi ?

Abu Dhabi location iamge - CruiseDirection

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates

The largest and wealthiest of the nation’s seven emirates

With much to offer, it attracts many cruise operators, including Celebrity, Silversea and P&O. When cruising to Abu Dhabi, you will need to know about the dress code. Here it is liberal, and Western wear is common, although native Emiratis often choose to wear their national dress.

There is never a bad time weather-wise to visit Abu Dhabi. The average temperature in August is 36°C, while in the coldest month, January, it is 18°C. The cruise port is in the centre of the city, so there is easy access to the skyscrapers, beaches, marinas, shopping malls and a plethora of cultural and religious attractions.

Visible from each of the bridges joining Abu Dhabi Island to the mainland, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is impressive. Conceived by the first president of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, it can accommodate up to 41,000 worshippers and is one of the few mosques in the region open to non-Muslims.

For a quick taste of the Gulf’s culture, you can stroll around the Dhow Harbour, look at the markets and enjoy a break at a sheesha café. For a more intense experience, the Heritage Village gives a real insight into the pre-oil era of the UAE. This walled complex contains a fort to repel invaders from the sea, a souq to trade goats for dates with neighbours, and a mosque.

Fast-forward to the modern face of Abu Dhabi and visit Ferrari World, where you can take a ride on the Formula Rossa (the world’s fastest roller coaster). There is also a flume ride through a V12 engine; a motion simulator that lets you ride with a race car driver, plus car exhibitions and live shows.

The Abu Dhabi Corniche is a waterfront promenade that stretches the length of the north-west shore of the city. It has white, sandy beaches and spectacular views of the amazing high-rise towers along the seafront. It also has a dedicated walking and cycling path.

An exciting and fast-moving city, Abu Dhabi has many attractions, including the Petroleum Exhibition, an old palace and a 2,200-year-old tomb known as the Round Structure. With lots to see and do, Abu Dhabi is obviously a location not to be missed when on your cruise.
